selective laser sintering (SLS)

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is the rapid prototyping technology of choice for durable, functional end use 3D printed parts. SLS technology was developed under sponsorship by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and acquired in 2001 by 3D Systems. The SLS process includes spreading a thin layer of plastic, metal or ceramic powder across the build platform and tracing the part with a high powder CO2 laser. After the part is traced the platform descends and another layer of powder is spread across the platform. Layer-by-layer the CO2 laser fuses the powder in the part chamber to form a solid model. The ability to produce several durable parts at one time makes SLS the ideal additive manufacturing process for Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM). SLS technology is also a great choice for living hinges and mechanical joints as well as short run or custom parts that require high strength and heat resistance.
